Monchique has many springs and is re-known for its good water. It gets commercially bottled in Caldes de Monchique and many from the coast drive up on weekends with a boot full of refillable 5-litre bottels to stack up on drinking water. That morning, we followed a spring to its treatment stations. Pipes and valves, where air is released from the water, along the way, the 2 kilometers walk ended at the first treatment station (image below) where the PH value is adjusted with lime stones to reduce the waters acidity to stop it reacting with the pipes to continues through for distribution. Overall really interesting.
