What makes a sustainable guest house?
As one of the first stops, we visited Diana’s guest house. She has had this house for the last 16 years and it’s certified as a responsible travel guest house. It’s build with local materials, using local labor and employing locals all year round with steady income to maintain it and prepare the house for guests. The interior is locally sourced and decorated with produce from local craftsmen When guests are there they are encouraged to shop locally at the daily market, the bathroom is fitted with an eco-friendly toilet and the sink is labelled with signs to use water thoughtfully. Basically the building is fitted with environmentally friendly fabric and information is provided to help guests to find their way round getting to know the local people, crafts and activities. In terms of promoting and encouraging sustainable behaviour whilst people are on holiday, there is little feedback or further prompts beyond information provision of how much water, non solar energy, gas or car emissions they are producing/ using.
